Beginner Internet Business Podcast

This Christmas weekend, we run an encore episode of the BIB Podcast show with a fantastic interview we did with Nick Usborne over a year ago. We'll be talking to Nick about his recent book, "NEW PATH TO RICHES: How Your Neighbors are Making a Big Second Income by Writing and Publishing Their Own Money-Making Websites".

We hope all you have a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year!

On this week's episode, I (Jonathan) make a crucial error the recording of our show. While Russell and I are recording (or so we thought) episode 159 I notice that my Edirol R-09 recorder is not running and immediately realize that the battery power had drained during the show.

As quick as I could, I grab my AC plugin adapter and hook it into the recorder but be then I realize I've missed most of the show.

Unfortunately I had to go in and re-record 80% of the show by myself afterward. You'll be able to hear Russell at the end of the show but for the most part it's just me solo (sorry Russell). Obviously there's a big lesson here - Always Check Your Equipment Before You Start a Show!

On this week's episode, we take plenty of questions:

  • Jason wants to know if he really needs a private policy statement for his website.
  • Derrick wants to know about a professional yet affordable mic for doing his own voiceovers
  • Andrew wanst to know if there is an easy way to integrate Ejunkie with Kunaki
  • Joe wants to know if there are any special video card requirements for editing and rendering video.

We'll be taking these questions and more!

On this week's episode SEO expert Michael Fleischner joins us to talk about Panda 2 and how it might be affecting your own online business startup. Many of you may have heard past interviews that we've done with Michael. Michael is the author of SEO Made Simple a fabulous book that I've referenced many times in the past.

Michael just released an update to the book this year right around the time Panda 1 was taking effect. Michael will be discussing Google's new focus on quality content and the increased emphasis of social media. Along with this, Michael will be talking about some of those age old aspects of SEO that don't need to be neglected; specifically on-page optimization and and off page back-linking.

We'll also be taking a couple of listener questions before the interview.

Jason wants to know about strategies for creating an effective link wheel

JoAnne wants to know if our "Deploy My Site" product would be beneficial in helping her create a new site for her daughter who is in the music industry.

We'll be discussing these questions and more!

We hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Russell and I took the weekend off from doing a show this week, but we still wanted to run a past interview that you all might enjoy.

This week's episode features a a fantastic interview we did some time ago with public domain expert Tony Ladig. In this audio interview, Tony shares how he's built a very successful online business turning public domain works into passive income.

So what do I mean by "public domain"? Well simply stated, it refers to any work where the copyright has expired. Most works created prior to 1923 automatically fall into public domain.  Public domain works offers a tremendous opportunity for online marketers who are looking to create content or information products. Here's an example. One of my favorite little books that sits on my office bookshelf is one that was written back in 1902 by James Allen  called "As a Man Thinketh".

While this book is well over a century old, it continues to be published and sold in ebook and physical book format; and because it was published in 1902, anyone is free to publish and sell this book or use it as free giveaway for email subscribers.

In this week's episode, you'll get to hear how Tony uses public domain works for his product development.

This week, we bring in a special guest that I've been wanting to interview for the past few months. Scott Foster of NeedanArticle.com joins us on the show this week to talk about the new changed to his article writing service. I had emailed Scott months ago about joining us for an interview, and while he wanted to come the show, he asked if we could hold off until he's able to implement all of the new changes at NAA.

Just recently they completed most of those changes and offer a much more user friendly site that allows new members to easily find and hire quality writers for the website and product content.

Scott will be sharing his story about he started NAA from a simple problem that he kept running into - finding qualified writers that aren't tied up with other projects. Scott knew the frustration of relying on one writer, so he developed a service that provided multiple writers for members that needed content done quickly.

Russell and I both use the NAA service for our niche websites and can certainly attest to the high level of service and support that Scott offers.

You can find out more about Scott's membership service by visiting www.NeedanArticle.com

Too often, people go searching for the right niche to go into without first evaluating their own knowledge and expertise. In this interview, you'll hear how Dr. Wei took his knowledge and experience as a a board-certified rheumatologist, and had used it to create passive income generating site.

Eric now earns a very good full time income from this blog.

This week we answer more questions questions about creating passive income online. Rick asks a question that I'm sure alot of people are wondering - When using Market Samurai, what criteria do you use to determine the right niche. Is it SEOT (seo traffic), or SEOC (competition) or PBR (phrase to broad ratio).

I use my example of selecting my recent niche "gallstone diet" to explain why I chose it based on the numbers in Market Samurai.

We also answer some questions regarding "refunds" and how to deal with them when selling DVDs through fulfillment sites like Kunaki.

For our mid week segment, I thought I would run an interview Russell & I did a year ago with Jonathan. In this interview,  Jonathan talks about article spinning - specifically why most of the article spinning software out there is not worth the money, and how he's managed to separate himself from the rest by creating a truly unique and remarkable  product like the Best Spinner.

Jonathan is running on a special on this powerful software but it will only last another day. Normally it's $77 per year but  for until Friday October 7th at midnight you can get it for just $47. Even if you miss that deadline, he still normally offers a $7 trial for 7days. You can get a copy at www.thebestspinner.com.

On this week's show, we spend time talking about our new niche websites that we've decided on during the Niche Website Training webinar series.

Russell will be sharing his thought process and research process for coming up with his new site topic - slow cookers. I'll be sharing my topic as well. It's not a product review site like Russell's, but one that based on the search numbers and competition using Market Samurai, could develop into a nice stream of income on the side.

Both of the niches we've selected are evergreen, meaning that these are topics that people should still be searching for online 10 years from now. We'll be keeping everyone posted on our progress as we develop these sites.

We'll also be tackling some more questions on the show today. We'll be sharing our opinions on the following:

This week on our mid-week segment I spend some time talking about a fantastic book I've started reading called Switch: How to Change Things When Change is Hard by Chip & Dan Heath authors of the bestselling book, Made to Stick.

In particular, one of the sections that really caught my attention was in chapter 3 where they talk about the problem of indecision. In an age where we are constantly bombarded every type of media under the sun, let's face it - it's hard for us to make firm decisions. When given a gazillion options, people naturally take the path of least resistance, and do nothing.

Consider this when it comes to starting an online business. You get ready to commit yourself to a goal of creating passive income and then what happens? Well, if you're like me early on when I first began,  you subscribe  to every e-newsletter on the planet with hopes of getting some cool new ideas right? But what happens?

You end up getting overloaded with so many ideas that your brain starts to short circuit. You begin to realize you can't do it all. You're just a finite human being with a limited amount of time, so you have to pick what works for you and unplug from all of the other messages out there telling you to "do it this way" or "do it that way".

If you're one of those people that's overwhelmed with all of the messages about how to start an online business, then I hope you'll consider unsubscribing from about 99% of them.

Decide what you want to do, and pick one strategy. If you've been a listener to our show for a long time, you know Russell and I don't sell hype. We don't promote anything that promises get rich quick.

Instead, we use a simple formula for generating passive income online and we'll be sharing these lessons for free on our upcoming Niche Website Training Webinar Tuesday September 20th at 8:00pm EST.

his week we answer questions about site monetization, embedding flash video and finding a good source for quality voice-over talent for your audio podcasts or information products.

Jeff, one of our listeners if having trouble monetizing his niche website on electric guitars. So far he has plenty of good page content but he's not generating much revenue from it.

Jeff's situation is certainly not unique. Often times people spend so much time and effort building their content, they neglect the important part of creating multiple streams of revenue from it. In Jeff's case, he's focused primarily on Google adsense for his revenue and not looking in other directions (that provide larger chunks of profit) like creating his own line of information products (videos, ebooks, etc).

In this week's show Russell and I will share some tips for boosting his income through product creation, and other affiliates like Amazon and Clickbank.

Is GoTo Training the right choice for creating and recording webinars?

On our midweek segment, I talk about marketing products that people want, not just need. I've heard a saying before that goes something like this - "You can make a living selling something people need, but you can make a fortune selling what people want."

Think about it;  What do people get more excited about - needs or wants? Sure, they'll spend money on things they need, as we all do but notice they'll also look for them at a discount. You take your car in for an oil change and find out that your two front tires need to be replaced - A need. It's not something you want to spend a fortune so you shop around for the best deal around town. But when it comes to things people really want, they'll usually pay a premium for quality.

An avid golfer never looks for the cheapest set of golf clubs he can find. A backpacking enthusiast will not even think about taking a chance at the lesser expensive hiking boots if he's unsure of the quality.

When targeting a niche for your next information product or affiliate site, don't just look at keyword competition alone. Think about your topic. Are people passionate about it? Is it something they are willing to spend a lot of  money on? What is the income level of those who are purchasing?

Don't just sell a need; sell a passion.

One of the most powerful tools for internet marketers and product developers is the mind map. A mind map is just a simple way for organizing your ideas in a visual format.

I've always found outlines to be boring. I'm visual, so I like to see graphic diagrams laid out in front of me. Some can get very detailed, while others are simple. I've scratched quite a few mind maps for past projects on scrap pieces of paper and greasy napkins.

Today, Russell and I will be talking about how we use mind maps for project planning as well as the software tools we use for mapping out projects online.

In addition, I've included a video excerpt on mind mapping your next information project from our DVD, Creating and Selling How-To Information on Amazon.

This week we are joined by Jason Matthews, author of How to Make, Market and Sell Ebooks - All for FREE. I came across Jason's book this past week on Amazon and ordered the Kindle edition.  After reading through it, I'd suggest without hesitation that anyone wanting some great marketing advice for selling more ebooks online should grab a copy.

As a self published author, Jason shares his own experience of learning what works and what does't when it comes to self publishing. Jason made plenty of costly mistakes in the beginning; like spending close to $2,000 to mail out 150 copies of his novel to bookstores across the country without getting a single response.

Over time, Jason discovered the best marketing strategies are actually free. Setting up a blog or using other social media sites and online forums don't cost a dime. In this interview, you'll hear how Jason has implemented those tools and strategies to sell a ton of ebooks.

I was talking to a friend this week who is a part-time welder. He enjoys doing it, but he expressed to me that it's hard to build a really profitable business because it takes up so much extra time.

I told him instead of only getting paid for his time, he should create a video training product that teaches welding principles and practices. I checked on Amazon for him and found a number of other welding DVD’s listed. This is a good thing. It indicates there’s a market for this type of product.

You don’t need to have high end movie production style equipment to do this. Think Blair Witch Project.

On this week's show we start off by talking about our 4 week Podcasting Mastery course starting August 2nd at 8pm. You can register by going to www.bibpodcast.com/podcast.

Just to give you an idea of where we were when we first  started out podcasting, Russell & I play a a short clip of the very first episode we did on Blog Talk Radio back on January 19, 2009- back when we had no listeners and our mics were cell phone. Here's a hint - We sound awful! If had come across the show back then, I would have cut it off after the first 2 minutes.

Fast forward two and a half years, and we now have 65,000 listens and about 5-6,000 downloads a month! If you'd  like to learn how to get started creating your own podcast show and build a huge following that lets you generate passive income through affiliate marketing and selling your own products at the same time, then I encourage you to register for the 4 week course.

We also answer some questions this week on the air. We discuss one question on whether or not to use Kunaki's bar code option when uploading your DVD cover graphics. We  often encourage our listeners to do use this company because it's so inexpensive to print and package DVDs and CDs.

We also tackle some affiliate questions like alternatives to Amazon as they begin to pull out of many states due to new sales tax laws.

We'll also be discussing a book I talked about during the mid-week segment called How I Sold a Million eBooks in 5 Months by John Locke. As I've mentioned before, this is one of the most practical marketing books I've read in a long time.

If you have any desire to sell your own information products online, you really need to grab this book. You can order the kindle version here for $4.99.

John was a former insurance salesman who decided he wanted write and sell novels. John starts off by sharing all the things he did wrong in the process of trying to market his first self published novel. He sold only 19 copies of his first novel which earned him a whopping $6.

Over a year's time, he learned what worked and what didn't and in the process developed a marketing system that cost him nothing to implement and has landed him on the New York Times bestseller list.

This week we featured a very inspiring interview with Dave and Mary Morris of www.front-porch-ideas-and-more.com. A couple of years ago, Dave and Mary Morris sat down to come up with an idea for an online business that would get them out of the regular 9-5 rat race. They wanted a business that they could both be passionate about; one that would allow them to work as a team.

One idea that they kept coming back to was fact that they both loved to drive around and look at the different porch designs and decorations that people had. As Dave mentioned, they would often see one that really caught their eye so much, that they would turn the car around and drive back by just to get a second look. After doing a little research online, they decided to create a site around that very topic- front porch ideas.

Both started out working hard at it as a team, writing content for the site. Mary said she would often stay up until 1 or 2 am working on it, while still working a corporate job. But they were both passionate about this niche and loved doing so, you can hardly call it work right?

Two years later, today Dave and Mary both now earn a full time income from their site through advertisers and affiliate sales. Both are living the life they want in the middle of what many have termed the "worst economy since the Great Depression". They travel whenever they want to visit family and friends and make every vacation a business trip since they are always looking for unique front porch designs to get pictures of.  In addition to creating their own content for their site, they also have a built in community of visitors that often submit photos of their own porch designs. What a great way to leverage your time!

I think you'll find this interview very inspiring if you have plans to start your online business soon.

This week, we played an interview with Jordan Reasoner and Steve Wright of SCDLifestyle.com. JOrdan and Steve share how they created an online business by targeting a very tight niche; one they both felt like they could contribute to from their own personal experience. Both Jordan and Steve had suffered from intestinal problems; Jordan was diagnosed with Celiac disease and Steve had suffered from IBS.

You'll hear them as they share how they started out putting up their website and writing that first ebook. Surprisingly, they didn't spend a lot of time doing keyword research. Instead they went with something they thought they could help others with. This is a lesson for anyone who spends way too much time analyzing keywords, before they begin writing a single paragraph.

Yeah research is important, but if you have something that you're passionate about and want to share with others, then go for it. Do something you love and the money will eventually come. Always a great lesson.

episode 127 Why Roland R-05 Recorder is Essential for Podcasting or Creating Audio Products

Today is our first mid-week podcast that we will start posting every week around Tuesday or Wednesday. Unlike our regular Friday podcast, these segments will not be live and they will usually be quite short - 10-15 minutes max.

This week I wanted to record a show using my Roland R-09HR recorder just to give you an example of the sound quality this little device has. If you are just getting started with podcasting, then I would highly recommend that this be one of the first pieces of sound equipment that you order.

The recorder has a built in condenser mic that gives better sound than many other stand alone mics out there; plus you can take it anywhere you go!

You can now convert drive time into podcast time which exactly how Jack Spirko of the Survival Podcast built his own podcast business. You can see his video here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F8UPsSU_EqU.

According to a recent study, most Americans won’t be able to retire until they’re into their 80′s. You can read the article here. Working past the age of 65 will become increasing normal for most, unless they’ve made the right investments.

Starting an online business that generates monthly residual income is a great way for anyone to fund that retirement income, if they’re willing to put in the upfront work. This week, you’ll hear an interview with Keith Farren, one of our former 16 Week Challenge members who’s already created a nice monthly residual income in just a little over a year. Keith has 3 mini-websites that continue to generate monthly revenue through Google Adsense, without him him having to do any additional work to them. He also has one large niche website that he continues to work on by adding more and more content.

You’ll hear the interview with Keith as he shares his own experience starting with no prior knowledge of online marketing just a little over a year ago.

The secret to being successful is very simple –  you study what other successful people are already doing and then model that. Simple…yes; Easy…no.

This week we interview Rachel D Young, author of the new book Conversations with Female Millionaires. In putting this book together, Rachel interviewed some of today’s wealthiest female entrepreneurs and had them share their own stories of their rise to the top.

In this interview, you’ll learn about some of the characteristics that separate these women from the rest. But keep in mind, this book is not just beneficial for women only, but anyone who has a vision of building their own successful business. “Success leaves clues” as Tony Robbins once said; and the clues are abundant in this book.
